Nicole Gruszecki is a visual artist from Calgary, Alberta who taps into her horror punk DIY roots for inspiration. Currently, she creates zines (mini self-published magazines), comics, drawings and paintings to bring joy to the people that engage with her work. Nicole’s zines are often mini love letters to the things in life she engages with most. Such as, horror movies, music, animals and videogames. Her art often has a nostalgic feel to it, pulling imagery from 90s patterns, 80s VHS tapes, classic science fiction and traditional comic book aesthetics. She works in a variety of mediums including paint, ink, markers, collage and digital art. Nicole’s aesthetic changes with each different medium she uses, responding intuitively to the art materials strengths and weaknesses within the medium.
This series of drawings, called Joyful Ghosts, started out as smaller zines called XOX, which act as love letters to the things in life that bring me joy. By expressing my love through zines I aim to bring joy in the people who pick them up and flip through them. It is my goal to create connections between people who love the same things.
Once I reflected on the XOX zines, I realized that my art has changed significantly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. What once was dark or macabre art morphed into little pockets of joy. During the pandemic I did my best to find joy in the little things of the day to day “new normal” that quarantine brought. Socially distanced hangouts, virtual drink, movie nights, and spontaneous celebrations of even the most unremarkable events were desperately needed to cheer myself up. I found joy in the little things that seemed trivial, such as sugary sweets, while inside I was working incredibly hard, such as these work animals. I struggled with my mental health and to simply exist each and every day. Not everyone saw this hard work, it is (like these hard working animals) translucent or spectral. Not everyone is haunted by these same ghosts, but the ones who are understand, for they are like me and have been through it themselves.
